The arrival and passage of phenomenal numbers of birds during Spring and Autumn migration is well documented and it is of course what makes them peak seasons for birding holidays, bird watching short breaks and guided day tours.

But it's also easier, during these transitional times, to observe winter and summer visitors gathering in preparation for their out-bound journey and there's a last chance to catch flocks of resident buntings, bustards and sandgrouse before they disperse to breed - or grab a Wallcreeper on its way to or from its low-altitude wintering quarters.

However the real excitement is reserved for those species just passing through of course and Catalonia, in NE Spain, is situated on a major European migration route. Crakes start us off in February, White-winged Tern, Red-footed Falcon and Red-throated Pipit arrive in April, and Dotterel, raptors and Common Crane take us through until November.

The Empordà to the north is like a mini-Catalonia and this birding trip will offer a final chance to see some of Spain's most sought-after bird species such as Balearic Shearwater, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Roller, Stone-curlew, Penduline Tit, Collared Pratincole, Great Bittern and Moustached Warbler.

Red-throated Pipit, Red-footed Falcon, White-winged Tern, Common Crane and Marsh Sandpiper are regular whilst, for the photographers, the compact reserve at El Cortalet will offer the best chance yet to snap close-ups of Water Rail, Spoonbill, Purple Gallinule and a host of warblers, waders, ducks and herons - and may be a Little or Spotted Crake.

Of course, for those with an appetite for excitement and the thrill of the hunt, one should always save the best birding trip until last and the Catalan Pyrenees are certainly that.

What chance then of seeing resident Lammergeier, Black Woodpecker and Wallcreeper all in one day?

Well, we'll certainly do our best and, with a spoon full of luck, we may even add Citril Finch, Rock Thrush, Alpine Chough, Red-backed Shrike, Golden Eagle, Ring Ouzel, Dipper, Siskin, Nuthatch, Water Pipit and migrant raptors and Black Stork to a host of woodland warblers, tits and finches.
