Bird Tour One - Welcome to Catalonia and Llobregat Delta

birding in spain sites to llobregat trip reports magpie photo

After picking you up at the airport, we'll immediately get a feel for Catalonia with an afternoon visit to the adjacent wetland reserve of Delta de Llobregat.

Sit back and enjoy a restful spectacle before we move on to the villa, on the edge of the Garraf Natural Park, where you can settle in, unpack and have a glass of Penedés vino or a refreshing cava.

If you fancy it, we can take an easy stroll through the local woodland and scrub before eating ourselves through the evening at an ocean-side restaurant.

Bird Tour Two - Ebro Delta/Delta de L'Ebre

Kentish Plover

A 75-minute trip south along the coast lies a place that will remain in your thoughts forever - the Ebro Delta.

After yesterday's practise, you won't be over-whelmed by the circus of herons, terns, warblers and waders but there is more on offer here with 'the world's rarest gull' the Audouin's Gull, the Slender-billed Gull and nine terns, including White-winged and Lesser Crested Tern.

Throw in Glossy Ibis, Spotted Crake, Bluethroat and Collared Pratincole and you won't want to stop for the picnic lunch.

Bird Tour Three - Cap de Creus/Cabo de Creus

Catalonia's unique range of habitats is demonstrated no more so than by this rocky peninsular and the spectacular oceanic and mountain birds it has to offer.

Where else can you watch sea birds such as Cory's, Balearic and Yelkouan Shearwaters without the aid of binoculars?

Turn around and, against a backdrop of such astounding beauty, the pallete is completed with Bonelli's Eagle, Orphean Warbler, Pallid Swift, Alpine Accentor, Rock Thrush, Ortolan Bunting and, in winter, Wallcreeper.

Bird Tour Four - Steppes (Lleida/Los Monegros)

Black-eared Wheatear

Another complete change of bird species accompanies yet another change of scenery, although the fact that the steppe is shrinking fast doesn't make the birds any easier to find - so several routes are an option here.

There is rarely disappointment though as this jewel in the heart of Catalonia serves up a remarkable number of rare and astonishing species. Great and Little Bustard, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Lesser Kestrel, Lesser Grey Shrike. Roller, Calandra Lark, Montagu's Harrier, Stone-Curlew, Dotterel and Great Spotted Cuckoo! The list is endless.

Bird Tour Five - Garraf Massif and Llobregat Delta

spain birding holidays sites garraf trip reports whinchat photo

Time to take it a little easier on the travelling, if not the birding, with the local Garraf mountains providing the setting for our search for the breeding Bonelli's Eagle.

Wallcreeper, Spectacled Warbler, Black Wheatear, Rock and Ortolan Buntings, Pallid Swift, Southern Grey Shrike and migrant raptors may keep us amused along the way until a late afternoon/early evening wander around the Llobregat roosts ties up the birding day.

Except that is for a seasonal twilight hunt for Eagle and Scops Owls.

Bird Tour Six - Aigüamolls de L'Empordà

Black-tailed Godwit

The Empordà to the north will offer a final chance not only to see some of Catalonia's harder-to-find species such as crakes, Glossy Ibis and Moustached Warbler, but also to say goodbye to some of the week's favourites, including Roller, Stone-Curlew and Short-toed and Booted Eagles.

And whilst migrants usually include Red-footed Falcon, Red-throated Pipit and Common Crane, for the photographers amongst you, the compact reserve at El Cortalet will offer the best chance yet to snap close-ups of Purple Gallinule, White Stork and a host of waders.

Bird Tour Seven - Pyrenees (Cadi-Moixero/Vall de Nuria)

spain bird watching trips sites pyrenees trip reports alpine accentor photo

Of course, for those with an insatiable appetite for excitement and the thrill of the hunt, one should always save the best until last and the Catalan Pyrenees are certainly that.

What chance then of seeing Lammergeier, Wallcreeper and Black Woodpecker all in one day?

Well, we'll certainly do our best and, with a spoon full of luck, we may even add Honey Buzzard, Ring Ouzel, Alpine Accentor, Red-backed Shrike, Snow and Citril Finches and Alpine Chough.
